Woodlawn Cemetery and Arboretum

Description

Founded in 1876, Woodlawn Cemetery is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Its development paralleled the growth of Toledo for much of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Although Woodlawn was considered an outstanding example of the "rural cemetery movement" when it's gates first opened, the city's expansion gradually transformed it into a quiet natural retreat well within the city limits. The cemetery's first superintendent, horticulturist Frank Eurich (1876-1900), created a mixture of rare and common, national and international flora. Its 160 verdant, wooded acres also provides a habitat to more than 208 confirmed varieties of birds. Woodlawn, a private, non-profit cemetery, has over 40 acres of burial space available.
