Old City Arboretum
The Old City Arboretum is not just a place of beauty but also an educational living museum that will enrich the quality of life in their city. This Arboretum, with its unique features, stands as a testament to their community's spirit and dedication, a living museum of our city's heritage that they helped design and continue to maintain. They are creating an opportunity for their community and visitors to recognize the importance of protecting and preserving their heritage, specimens, and landmark trees, as well as the natural environment within the city of Senoia, GA.
The Arboretum celebrates the natural environment, creating a sense of wonder and raising awareness of the significant history of trees in their urban forest. Enhancing knowledge through this living museum will help protect and preserve trees, which is their primary focus. They offer two self-guided walking tours: The Old City Arboretum Collection and The Learning Loop Collection, designed for education and enjoyment.
They are deeply grateful to have Prized Landmark trees, including an Osage Orange (c.1750), which marks the beginning of Senoia's history with the Osage Indian tribe. This tree, which dates back at least 275 years, is the second-oldest Osage Orange tree in the country. Also notable is the Dawn Redwood, a living fossil previously thought to be extinct for millions of years. The origin of this tree can be traced back to the original seeds from the dawn redwoods of China. These trees are not just part of our collection, but they also represent significant historical and botanical milestones.
They are committed to ongoing research to locate additional trees of significance, date and identify the origins of their trees, develop collections of trees native to Georgia, and add various species of woody shrubs and unique tree to expand our collections and attract the curious. Our conservation efforts give hope for the future of these historic trees.
