Duke University
Description
Duke University is proudly known as a “university in the forest.” For 17 consecutive years, their campus has been recognized as a Tree Campus Higher Education site, a reflection of their deep commitment to sustainability and stewardship. The legacy of Duke’s trees, rooted in the vision of Frederick Law Olmsted, is central to the identity and history of their campus and community.
Their 17,000 trees do more than beautify the landscape—they provide shade, oxygen, carbon sequestration, water filtration, erosion control, compost, mulch, and even lumber for campus use. Preserving this vital resource is essential to maintaining the feel of Duke’s grounds while also increasing biodiversity with 242 species cataloged.
