Arboretum De Nieuwe Ooster
The memorial park of De Nieuwe Ooster (33 hectares in size) houses a special collection of coniferous and deciduous trees. The collection currently consists of 1053 different trees and special shrubs.
The park was laid out in 1892 and was designed by a nationally known landscape architect Leonard Anthony Springer (1855 – 1940). Springer was a dendrologist and wanted to plant a wide variety of trees. In the spirit of Springer, they continue this tradition. Due to the wide variety of trees due to shape, color, flowering, scent, fruit and trunks, the arboretum is a colorful tree park, which gives joy to tree lovers but also to relatives who visit the park for a funeral or grave visit.
Because of the wide variety of trees and therefore also fruits, the arboretum is a true paradise for a rich variety of birds. Every month there are tree tours, courses and walks. The Dutch Dendrological Society uses the arboretum for an assortment of courses.
In the park there are many special and rare trees such as the Toxicodendron verniciflua, a more than 125 year old Cedrus libani 'Stenocoma', a 100 year old Quercus frainetto, a few very large Pterocarya fraxinifolia and more than 130 year old large Fagus sylvatica 'Atropunicea'. Very rare is the Idesia polycarpa that is richly provided with large bunches of orange berries every year. A real eye-catcher is the Fagus sylvatica 'Pendula'. You can hide beautifully in the enormous foliage!
